Outstanding success for St Mary’s

St Mary’s Sports College has become the first secondary school in Hull to be judged as Outstanding by Ofsted.

This is a fantastic achievement for the school and for Hull City Council, who are delighted to see progress towards the city’s eight pledges for education, which state that every school will have an achievable plan towards becoming recognised as an outstanding school.

Inspectors commented on the outstanding care, guidance and support that pupils receive, as well as the good teaching and excellent curriculum which combine to enable all students to make outstanding progress.

Councillor Christine Randall, Portfolio Holder for Education and Children’s Services, said:

“I would like to congratulate all the staff and students on this achievement. It is down to all their hard work that St Mary’s has been recognised by Ofsted, and rightly so. I hope that the school will take pride in this success and continue to improve for years to come.

“Education in Hull is on the up, and I hope that we see another record set of GCSE results in August.”

Nigel Richardson, Director of Children and Young People's Services, said:

“I am delighted that Ofsted has recognised that St Mary’s is an outstanding school. This is testament to all the hard work and dedication of the head and all his teachers and staff, as well as the pupils and their families.

“This is also a great achievement for the city and an important step towards education in Hull getting the recognition that it deserves. When we set out our eight pledges many people thought they were too ambitious, but St Mary’s has proved that schools in Hull can do it. I hope that this is just the first of many secondary schools to become outstanding in the coming years.”
