About Teach in Hull

More teachers are coming to Hull and making a difference to results

Teach in Hull is part of a major recruitment drive in Hull - transforming the prospects of school children.

Since 2009, when the city began its drive to get more teachers to make their careers in Hull, figures from maths, English and science departments show that Hull has been able to cut the number of non-specialists teaching in core subjects.

Recent analysis shows that in maths, there’s been a 5.5 per cent reduction, whilst in science the drop has been 3.9 per cent.

Schools are also finding it easier to recruit teachers on the first attempt. Figures show that they have been able to do so 71.5 per cent of the time and were unable to make an appointment on only 18.5 per cent of occasions. There was an average of 6.2 applications for each post.

Senior school leaders say they have had increased interest for jobs they have advertised since the recruitment campaign began.

There is also evidence to suggest that the quality of people applying is higher and that more applicants (53.5 per cent) were being attracted from outside the city.

What’s more, the number of people visiting the Teach In Hull website and the number registering their interest in moving to Hull has also doubled.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to improve the attainment of pupils in Hull secondary schools and here too, the city has notched up some notable successes. The results show that 42.3 per cent of pupils achieved five A*-Cs including English and maths, which is an increase of over 5 per cent from last year.

There have been other improvements. Many schools have changed how they advertise, how they recruit staff, and what they offer to get the best teachers. They are joining together in a strategic approach to recruitment and are developing a comprehensive workforce plan which takes account of budgets, curriculum development, and staffing profiles so they can recruit the very best teachers.

More GCSE success

Hull has closed the gap on the national average for overall GCSE results, with 75.8 per cent of pupils achieving five A*-Cs overall compared to the national average of 75.4 per cent – an increase of over 20 percentage points in the last five years.

Eleven out of 14 schools improved their results this year and four of those were by over ten percentage points.
